The Caminito del Rey route: what to expect

About 8 linear kilometres, one-way, from north (Ardales) to south (Álora), taking 3-4 hours: 4.8 km are access paths and 2.9 km the famous boardwalks pinned to the gorge walls. It is not physically hard — flat or downhill — but it is long, shadeless in stretches, and there's no turning back.

The rules to know before you go

• Footwear: comfortable shoes, no heels; flip-flops banned.
• Large backpacks, bags and bulky items: banned for safety (small backpacks are fine).
• Pets: not allowed.
• Crutches and poles (including hiking poles): not allowed.
• Smoking: banned along the whole route.
• Entry slots: groups enter every 10 minutes; be at the entrance 30 minutes early.
• Minors: under-8s cannot enter; ages 8-17 must be accompanied by an adult and carry ID.

What if the weather turns?

With heavy rain or excessive wind the organisers may close access for safety (wind accelerates on the hanging bridge). Light rain is fine, but umbrellas are banned: a raincoat is mandatory. If they close for weather, ticket exchanges for another date are handled in your personal area on the official website, subject to availability.
